Wall Street，which is an actual street in lower Manhattan and a symbol of American capitalism in general，takes its name from the defensive wall that extended along the street in Dutch times．The principal financial institutions of the city have been located there since the early nineteenth century．Wall Streeter，Wall Street broker，Wall Street plunger，and Wall Street shark are among American terms to which the street gave birth．Wall Street broker was used as early as 1836，and Wall Street was being called the Street by 1863．
