charlies(俚)乳房

The British slang charlies for a woman’s breasts, one etymologist suggests, derives from“the opulent charms displayed by the mistresses of Charles Ⅱ.”According to this theory charlies was originally Charlie’s because they were“playthings belonging to the king.”In any case,a number of things have been named charley or charlies by the British.Long before policemen were dubbed bobbies,London night watchmen were called Charleys,or Charlies. The obsolete designation is believed to derive from the name of Charles Ⅰ,who extended and improved the London night watch to curb street offenses in 1640.Charles Ⅰ,beheaded by Cromwell in 1649,definitely wore a short, triangular beard called a Charlie that is now known as a Vandyke.Charley was also the term for a fox used by the British for almost a century, beginning in the late 1700s.The eponym here is brilliant British politician and foreign secretary Charles James Fox(1749-1806),who constantly outfoxed the opposition.See also bobby;Bristols.
