Chutzpah(HUTS—pah)derives from a Hebrew word meaning“insolence, audacity.”Signifying impudence, gall, brazen nerve, incredible cheek, and unmitigated audacity in Yiddish and in American slang,it more often today indicates an admirable quality in a person.Leo Rosten gives the classic definition of chutzpah in The Joys of Yiddish:“That quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan.”The word is becoming familiar in Britain as well.
