Chutzpah(HUTS—pah)derives from a Hebrew word meaning“insolence，audacity．”Signifying impudence，gall，brazen nerve，incredible cheek，and unmitigated audacity in Yiddish and in American slang，it more often today indicates an admirable quality in a person．Leo Rosten gives the classic definition of chutzpah in The Joys of Yiddish：“That quality enshrined in a man who，having killed his mother and father，throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan．”The word is becoming familiar in Britain as well．
