The American name for a version of the dome—shaped felt hat that the British call a bowler．The man it honors is memorialized by the Derby at Epsom Downs and the American Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs．The twelfth earl of Derby，Edward Stanley(d．1834)，had a great interest in horse racing．The Derby named after him became so popular that many Americans attended it．After the Civil War，American spectators at the“Blue Ribbon of the Turf”noticed that sportsmen often wore odd—shaped bowler hats．A number were brought back home，where it is said that a Connecticut manufacturer made a stiff felt，narrow—brimmed version that an unknown New York store clerk sold as“hats like they wear at the Derby．”In any event，derby became the American term for bowler，the most popular headwear for men until the 1920s．
